This file concerns the death investigation of Ricky C. McCormick, whose body was found in a rural St. Charles County, Missouri field on June 30, 1999. The St. Charles County Sheriff's Department asked the FBI Laboratory to examine coded notes recovered from McCormick's trouser pocket, hoping they might explain how he died. FBI examiners found indications of an encrypted message but reported that efforts to decrypt the notes were unsuccessful; a later document examination found no useful indented writing, watermarks, or source-identifying physical characteristics.
