FBI File on the 1980 Shooting of Vernon Jordan
This file concerns the FBI's investigation of the May 1980 shooting of Vernon E. Jordan Jr., then president of the National Urban League, outside a Marriott hotel in Fort Wayne, Indiana. FBI records include Indianapolis and Headquarters teletypes, nationwide lead requests, Jordan's March through May travel schedule, and interviews and follow-up concerning three white men reportedly seen in a vehicle before the shooting. Laboratory reports examine the recovered .30-06 cartridge case, bullet and bullet fragments, fence material, a rifle, and an anonymous racist message; the rifle submitted for testing was excluded as the weapon that fired the recovered bullet. The released material also includes a June 1980 re-enactment assessing whether the vehicle occupants could have followed Jordan to the hotel and investigative efforts to identify vehicles and persons matching witness descriptions.
