This file concerns the FBI civil rights investigation opened after George Zimmerman fatally shot Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, on February 26, 2012. The Tampa Field Office opened a Hate Crime, Racial Discrimination, Force and/or Violence matter on March 20, 2012 to determine whether any federal civil rights violations occurred, including possible interference with federally protected activities. The released records include the FBI case initiation form, FD-302 reports documenting materials received from the Sanford Police Department, requests for forensic enhancement of 911 audio, evidence receipt forms, and transcripts of television media interviews about the case. The Sanford Police materials listed in the file include 911 calls, witness interviews, event reports, maps, medical examiner or crime scene photographs, a CVSA-related document, and older local law enforcement reports used as background material.
