This FBI security file concerns Joseph Katz and the Bureau's efforts to trace his movements and associations in Europe in 1949. The records include field-office reports, memoranda, and cables involving New York, New Haven, Washington Field, San Francisco, and other offices. They discuss Katz's travel from Paris to the Franco-Spanish border region, possible contact with Spanish Loyalists or underground figures, and a later stay near St. Jean de Luz. The file also contains reporting on his wife Bessie Katz, their daughter, family correspondence, and related background checks, including an inquiry into possible links to other security investigations. Some material consists of earlier FBI memoranda on unidentified suspected Soviet agents and the possible identification of 'Jack' as Heinz Roth.
