This file concerns the 1997 disappearance of screenwriter Gary Martin DeVore after he drove from Santa Fe, New Mexico, toward his home in Carpinteria, California. The Los Angeles Field Office opened a preliminary inquiry under the federal kidnapping statute after the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office requested help with a possible interstate crime. A July 10, 1997 FBI memorandum records DeVore's last reported phone contact, credit-card and cellular-phone location information, unsuccessful searches, and the local agency's concerns about media attention and possible foul play. The released records also include Savannah Information Technology Center database-search results concerning DeVore's addresses, credit activity, financial records, and his company, Back Roads Productions, Inc.
