This FBI correspondence concerns reports that Charles O'Banion, father of former Chicago gangster Dean O'Banion, owned or lived near a farm outside Coldwater, Kansas, suspected of being a possible criminal rendezvous. The Kansas City office investigated information passed on by the U.S. Secret Service and Hutchinson detective Ed Cunningham in 1939. The records include August and September 1939 letters summarizing interviews with Sheriff George Williams and former Sheriff J. Overocker about past aircraft landings, expensive cars, an Italian bodyguard, and visitors described as gangsters. Both officials said the suspicious activity appeared to have ended years earlier, and the FBI closed the matter because it found no pertinent information warranting further inquiry.
