FBI File on the 1986 Miami Shooting Incident

This file concerns the April 11, 1986 FBI shootout in Miami, Florida, during an attempt to arrest William R. Matix and Michael Lee Platt for a series of bank and armored-car robberies. The FBI conducted an administrative inquiry into the operation, the gunfight, agent conduct, weapons, injuries, and the surrounding investigation. The released material includes an inquiry report describing the surveillance, vehicle stop, exchange of fire, deaths of Special Agents Benjamin P. Grogan and Jerry Dove, and wounds to several other agents. It also contains a narrative of the suspects' suspected robbery activity from late 1985 through March 1986, along with tables of contents for witness interviews, laboratory reports, shooting-scene analysis, firearms records, management material, legal opinions, and publicity records. The report states that approximately 145 shots were fired and that the U.S. Attorney found the agents acted within the scope of their authority.
