WW1 Photos
World War 1, also known as The Great War, was a war that lasted almost 4 1/2 years, and introduced new ways of conducting it. For example, gas attacks, aerial combat, flame throwers, major trench warfare, tanks, submarine attacks, and just plain butchery. In the Battle of the Somme, for example, Great Britain suffered over 60,000 casualties in the first day. This was a war that, when ended, tallied up a butcher's bill of 5,525,000 military dead for the allied nations (Britain, France, Russia, United States, Japan, Italy, and others) and 4,386,000 military dead for the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria). Never mind all the millions of civilian deaths caused by starvation, disease, ethnic cleansing and genocide. Or the even more awesome Spanish Flu, in which over 50,000,000 deaths are attributed to that started in 1918 ran out of steam in late 1921. I think the only ones that made out in trench fighting in the war were the rats. But enough of the writing, here's some copies of photos I rounded up. |
