Most families in that era couldn't afford photo's of family members, so sometimes the only picture's they had were of the deceased person. Sometime's the eye's would be painted on the picture to make them seem alive. There's a lot of children's pictures since during that era a lot of them died very young.

The Victorians did NOT pose the dead to appear alive. Ever. That is a myth. Not all of these photos are post mortem, in fact the ONLY post mortem photos are obvious with the decedent lying in repose in a bed or coffin. |

Photos were not so expensive that most people couldn't afford them. Initially there weren't many photographers, so getting an appointment and family together wasn't easy. Photography being so new, and the era's extremely high mortality rates, people often died before they could have photos taken. For the first time, the average family could preserve the image of a loved one, so VPMP was born. A post mortem photo was better than no photo. If there's a pmp of someone, that's the only photo of them. It really wasn't all that common, but they are obvious with decedent lying in repose in a bed or coffin.
