Re: Weird Old Post Mortem Photography
She was obviously very sick, but this is pre-mortem not post mortem. A living photo was preferred but if the photographer didn't get to the home in time, post mortem photos were better than no photos.

Re: Weird Old Post Mortem Photography
Scared to death of what??? None of them look scared to death because they were not post mortem photos. The only post mortem photos are the very obvious pmp. Family bathed and dressed the decedent then laid them in repose in a bed or coffin, THEN the photographer came to the home and took a photo as the decedent was lying in repose. Even if they were dead, that's a loved one, best friend, playmate so why would they be scared??? Attitudes about death were quite different from today, and they dealt with death quite regularly, taking care of their own. |

Re: Weird Old Post Mortem Photography
Why would they be scared? That is their loved one, sibling, BFF. Death was all too common and views were a bit different than today. Families did all of the prep and burial. Only 4 of these photos are post mortem any way.

Re: Weird Old Post Mortem Photography
This isn't post mortem. If a photographer could get to the home before a person died, a pre-mortem photo was obviously preferred.

Re: Weird Old Post Mortem Photography
The Victorians never posed the dead to appear alive. Ever. That is a myth. Victorian post mortem photos were actually rare and quite obvious, with the deceased lying in repose in a bed or coffin. It wasn't common and photos were only taken if there were no other photos of the deceased. It wasn't a trend or fad or funerary rite. There is so much misinformation on the internet. When a loved one died, family bathed and dressed the decedent, then laid them in repose in a bed or coffin, THEN a photographer came to the home and took a photo, as they were, lying in repose. Don't trust everything you read on the internet.

Re: Weird Old Post Mortem Photography
There are only 4 post mortem photos in this compilation. It is a myth that the Victorians posed the dead to appear alive. Didn't paint eyelids either. The Victorians did take post mortem photos, but it wasn't a fad, trend or custom. Photography was new and not always easy to access. With such high mortality rates, if someone died before having the opportunity to have photos taken, a post mortem photo was better than no photo. They were not exactly common, and they were quite obvious with the decedent lying in repose in a bed or coffin. Family bathed and dressed the decedent, then laid them in repose in a bed or coffin, THEN the photographer came to the home and took a photo, as they were, lying in repose

Re: Weird Old Post Mortem Photography
There are only 4 post mortem photos in this compilation, and the last photo is not post mortem. The Victorians did not pose the dead or paint eyes on eyelids so they appeared alive. Those are myths of many. Photography was new and not always easy to access, and with such high mortality rates, people often died before having the opportunity to have photos taken, therefore a post mortem photo was better than no photo. If there's a post mortem photo, it's the only photo. One photo is pre-mortem, or shortly before death. If the photographer arrived before the death, a pre-mortem photo was preferable. Family bathed and dressed the decedent, then laid them in repose in a bed or coffin ,THEN a photographer came to the home and took a photo, as they were, lying in repose. There is so much misinformation on the internet. Post mortem photos were rare and quite obvious. A good rule of thumb, if you question whether or not a photo is post mortem, 9x out of ten it is not post mortem. |

Re: Weird Old Post Mortem Photography
Only 4 photos are post mortem, the others are just regular photos that have been mislabeled. It's a myth that the Victorians posed the dead to appear alive. No painting eyes on eyelids or placing glass eyes. Stands were ONLY used to assist a living person hold a pose, and could not support dead weight. Victorian post mortem photos were taken, but they were not common and they are obvious with the decedent lying in repose in a bed or coffin. Don't you wonder how the Victorians managed to make the dead look so alive? Well they were alive in MANY photos labeled post mortem. A good rule of thumb, if you question whether or not a photo is post mortem, 9x out of ten it is not post mortem. |

Only four of these photos are post mortem. MANY photos out there are mislabeled. Contrary to popular belief, Victorian post mortem photos were not common, and they are quite obvious with the decedent lying in repose in a bed or coffin.
