If it makes you happier, all the soldiers in the photo probably died before the end of the war. If it was indeed Stalingrad the photo is from, the only chance they survived is if they were flown out because they were wounded. Of the 90,000+ prisoners taken at Stalingrad, only a few thousand ever got home.
The grins are easier to understand if that sniper had shot a few of your friends to death before they got her. BTW, Stalin probably killed a lot more soviet women than the germans, thru starvation (Ukraine) or purges.
