Virtually none of those steel dash vehicles had even so much as a lap belt for protection..

We forget just how survivable modern car crashes are. A 20mph "bump" in an old car with no belts, solid steering columns which basically meant a steel spear through the chest and solid metal interiors no safety glass so flying shards of sharp glass....so 20 mph could very well be fatal.
