A Coast Guard seaman died at his battle station aboard the USS MENGES, torpedoed by a Nazi sub in the Mediterranean. He represents the old Coast Guard expression, `you have to go out, but you don’t have to come back.’ PhoM1c. Arthur Green.
(Thanks to Photoplay for the info)
Which reminds me of the Navy SEAL expression, "If I wanted to be careful, I would have joined the Coast Guard!"

Look the other side of the car too and some info

This is a ambush and killing and mutilate of General Friedrich Kussin (1895-1944)
The German commander of Arnhem in the Netherlands, was ambushed and killed and mutilated by British paratroopers at a crossroads on September 17, 1944 during Operation Market Garden. This is a photograph of Josef Willeke, his dead driver, also killed in the attack by multiple machine gun fire, along with his interpreter, Max Köster. The three Germans were apparently only armed with second-rank obsolete rifles.

As shown in the photograph of the General scalped, and the driver partially
If you ask me I think it is more American Indian habit than British, many Indian paratroopers served in the US army under WW2
