Probably helps keep the person cooler by storing fat in a location on the body/booty so that it isn't dispersed more evenly over the body creating a layer of insulation - kinda the opposite of what you'd want if you were, say, an Inuit.

My oldest cousin married a chick that in high school had the teeniest tiniest little waist that ran Into one of the biggest asses I ever personally saw. Three kids later she filled out everywhere else.
