i love these victorian post mortem pictures. I think the victorians were much more in touch with reality than some people are today and dealt with death in a much better way. The liitle baby ones are sad though.
Back in the early days of photography it was extremely expensive to take photos so there would be a special occasion that took planning ,dressing up etc. when they were taken.A lot of times family members would die before any photographic memory was taken.In these cases where there were no known photos,'death photos'would be hurriedly taken with the subjects posed in various ways( in a bed " sleeping" or with toys and sometimes to hold the body up ,the parent would be covered in black cloth and would stoop behind the child sitting in a little chair) The use of racks would hold a body for a long exsposure in some photos if you look close and the use of make up to paint the eyes open too.The idea was to not look dead if possible.
