fake open eyes are painted over closed eyes.
I was given a picture of family friends where the dad had his eyes closed and was asked to fix it. (No, he wasn't dead. He just blinked at the wrong time.) I remembered the Memento Mori pictures and borrowed their trick and painted eyeballs on his closed eyelids. It's fooled everyone who's seen it so far!
