Re: Some More Victorian Momento-mori
I think I've commented on this before, and it applies mostly to the kids. Back in the day Momento-mori were often the only thing that was left to remember the babies by. Clothes/toy/whatnot would be handed down to the next child. In addition how long did you have to sit there without moving for the picture to be exposed? I couldn't get the Boy to stand still for 10 seconds so I could get pics at his graduation. Back to the subject at hand. I also find the pictures beautiful. There are a few floating around the Irish part of the family. Pretty sure my Aunt Shirley has them. Taken before they made the trip West. She won't give 'em up yet. Kim's Geneological Background: Criminals, such as PBF, and bunch of other goofy Irish peeps and from my Dad's side a dude named 'Fat Duncan'. However that one is pretty accurate. Bunch of round Scots. Athough I like to call him 'Stout Duncan'. Damn, I strayed way off the subject. Sorry about that. Prebreakfast drugs and posting. Not always a good thing. |

Re: Some More Victorian Momento-mori
Here's something freaky sometimes they were propped up to be made lifelike. I think these are the rarest, where fake open eyes are painted over closed eyes. Of course one of the freakiest I saw was a dead guy holding his dead son but....looked like the guy was dead for a while. Not exactly how I would want to picture a loved one. http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/32946 http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs//archives/14682 http://www.deathonline.net/rememberi.../victorian.cfm http://community.livejournal.com/dar...ia/614217.html http://www.parentdish.com/2006/10/18...h-photographs/ http://mourningphotography.com/ |

Re: Some More Victorian Momento-mori
What Kimosabe said. Plus, back then photography was very expensive. Average people didn't have any photos of their loved ones. Would you like to live your life with the face of your parent or child slowly fading from your memory?
