Re: Sleeping Beauty *whole-body CT scan added*
There's an interesting article about Rosalia Lombardo on this German site. It seems that a combination of sunlight, flash photography, and rising humidity had caused her body to deteriorate somewhat in recent years. Her hair was slowly bleaching, dark patches were appearing on her skin, and overall her complexion was becoming rougher and less radiant than it used to be. Last year an Italian anthropologist intervened and transferred her body, still in its original coffin, to a hermetically-sealed glass sarcophagus. A film on the glass protects her against light damage, and the structure is filled with nitrogen and kept at a constant humidity to stave off bacteria. The Capuchin monks in charge of the catacombs wouldn't allow anyone to "touch up" the body, but at least it won't decay anywhere near as quickly now. ![]() ![]() (the photos are screenshots from a documentary on the same site. Alas, google translate doesn't work on videos, so I can't make out more than like 5% of what they're saying) |
