Re: Sat In His Tank...Dead

There's a great site that has some very nice video of the battle that killed this driver. It was in Cologne during the first recorded engagement between a German tank and the brand new American M-26 Pershing.

The round that penetrated the mantel above the driver's head also took off the tank commander's leg who died a short time later.

Re: Sat In His Tank...Dead

You can see where the penetrating round went through the turret. Molten metal, metal shards and concussion were all deadly on a hit like this. The M46 was a better tank than the Sherman. I can't tell from the pic what it is. Others on here can call it.

We put many men in danger with our tanks and strategy for tankers. Overwhelm with numbers was the plan. Same thought as the ruskies.

75mm panther round through mantlet. If hatch was closed he would have survived. Panther caught them off guard.

Re: Sat In His Tank...Dead

Well, you already know its a Sherman. They probably were fighting a Panzer V, and that is why there is a penetration hole in the turret above the guys head. German armored rounds nearly always penetrated U.S. Armor. Once the round penetrates, the shrapnel, (along with whatever metal it chipped off the inside of the American vehicle, which is known as "Spalling") bounces around inside the tank, and doesn't stop ricocheting until it hits something soft, which is either a seat pad, or one of the humans inside the tank. After a hit, it would literally be a hornets nest of flying metal chunks, until they all found a place to land. American tankers were frequently full of metal when they were removed from our tanks. Think of hitting a golf ball inside a completely tiled bathroom, multiply it by 500, and you have the inside of an armored vehicle after a penetration round. It was not until late in the war that we finally had a tank that could stand up to a slugging match with a German tank. I think you actually have the video on here, somewhere. The American tank knocked out the German tank. The German Commanders legs were both amputated during the fight when an American round penetrated, and he climbed out on top of the turret and died. The driver jumped out and ran off, so he survived. No sign of the radio man or loader in the video, so they probably were killed in the first penetration. I thought the cameraman should have gotten an award for valor, as he was outside, about 50 feet away, during this whole fight. He must have had balls of steel. The camera never wavered.

Re: Sat In His Tank...Dead

It was a sherman that got hit out front by the panther. Took the commanders leg off and killed the driver. A pershing with a 90mm cannon was moved up and that is what destroyed the panther.
