I think they did a pretty good job making them look alive, particularly for the time period. I always wondered why they did this, then i read that some people died ( children in particular) before they got a family portrait done so there would be no pictures of them for the family once buried. I guess they rather have a dead picture then no picture at all.

I wish I knew why children had to die so young. It is heartbreaking. The photos are beautiful, but they hurt the soul, knowing that the children would never live full lives.

There were no vaccines or antibiotics during this time, and so children fell to disease and infections rapidly. Very sad.

idk about anyone else but I would never be able to sit there ready for a picture holding my dead child. I would be a complete wreck
