That photo was taken after the third exhumation, in 1956: it was exhumed before back in 1883 and in '30s (unofficially): this open-close-open-close process is thought to be the reason why the body has darkened so much, since it was exposed to weather distress, especially to humidity. After the first exhumation, witnesses were amazed by the good conditions of the body, which was inside a coffin, which was inside another coffin, which was inside ANOTHER coffin: 3 coffins 1 pope, in matrioska style: that triple protection was removed after the first exhumation, though, and the single coffin used from that moment on couldnt hold up in humidity. So it was rightfully considered incorrupt, of course now it's no longer. These photos were also taken in 1956 and these ones were taken in 2000 |
