Great post Kelly .
Nice collections of pics
Never seen those Masks before. Those iron lungs, I guess during the polio epidemic? And that Wooden prosthetic hand 1800 Workmanship is magic.

Re: Medical Tour Of The Past

Wooohooo. They still make them
Is it wrong to want one.

The mask had glass openings for the eyes and a curved beak shaped like that of a bird. Straps held the beak in front of the doctor's nose. The mask had two small nose holes and was a type of respirator which contained aromatic items. The beak could hold dried flowers (including roses and carnations), herbs (including mint), spices, camphor or a vinegar sponge.

Re: Medical Tour Of The Past

They used to believe that disease was carried by bad odours, or miasma emitted by rotting organic matter. If they'd used camphor on the whole gown, they may have protected themselves from flees... or just moths.

As may be seen on picture here,
In Rome the doctors do appear,
When to their patients they are called,
In places by the plague appalled,
Their hats and cloaks, of fashion new,
Are made of oilcloth, dark of hue,
Their caps with glasses are designed,
Their bills with antidotes all lined,
That foulsome air may do no harm,
Nor cause the doctor man alarm,
The staff in hand must serve to show
Their noble trade where'er they go.

Re: Medical Tour Of The Past

That transfusion bottle has me puzzled. I make out "10 May 1938" on the label, and judging by the materials used, this fits. But, the NBTS wasn't called that until 1994, when it was changed from 'Blood Transfusion Service'.
