The logs are also piled after they are cut, to let them dry out a bit, makes them lighter as well.

I have pics of my dad logging like that, and when I was in my teens, we logged with me riding the belgians...we drug out three trees at a time chained to each horse

This picture was taken in the upper pinsula of Michigan. The snow gets 8 feet or higher so it wasn't uncommon for logs to be moved this way and through winter it was the only way.
