Re: Last Family Photos

Love these pics. Sad but totally captivating. Not only did thet use stands to hold the corpses up, but they painted eyes on closed eyelids too, didn't they! Fascinating. My father in law took a pic of his dead wife and carried it around with him. ( Maybe just to reassure himself she WAS dead!).

Notice the way the photographer has positioned his arm in order to support the head?

Re: Last Family Photos

Most people took 3 photos in their lives: at birth, when they wed and at death

Re: Last Family Photos

That is some weird stuff that's for sure. They must of wanted a final photo to cherish, so I get what they are doing.

Re: Last Family Photos

This was a common practice for the simple fact these were often the ONLY photos that they had of themselves/family. It was rare to have photos of yourself or others back in the day..

Re: Last Family Photos

I wonder if the parents even grieve given such high infant mortality, or are they just like "oh well -shrug- let's make another one!"

Re: Last Family Photos

Now I lay me down to sleep is an organization that takes pictures of mostly newborns that have passed away. They do any age from birth to 18, but most of the time by the time you are 48 hours old you have a ton of pictures already. NILMDTS photographers get a lot of calls. Most of the time you can't even tell the baby has passed.
