Wow a cartoonist...that's pretty cool. I studied art in high school and college...even attended USC's cartoonist and animator program way back in the early eighties (before computers). I always wanted to be a technical illustrator. Unfortunately, I had a run in with your typical jealous joy sucking art teacher (you know the type) and I soured on the profession. One of my friend's sons works for one of the larger animation studios as an illustrator/cartoonist. I know he worked on several kids cartoons. I grew up with a family that worked at the old Hanna-Barberra Studios. I was so stupid...I never asked for any cells. Man do I regret that. Totally cool that you're an artist (and gainfully employed). What type of cartoons? Political, strip, gameing, media, etc.?

So often you only hear the horror stories...it good to here those boys are doing good and are happy. I knew you adopted, but I don't remember the Russian part. My memory issues pretty much suck. so maybe you have told me, but I don't recall that part. Eric and Jake love to have fun with that aspect of my MS..."Mom, don't you remember saying I could (insert something ridiculous!!) And you would give me (insert a ridiculous amt of money)

Oh please, don't think a thing of it...the story is interesting to folks and maybe someone out there sitting on the fence about foriegn adoption will see the post and adopt a child as well. I appreciate you asking. At least this wasn't about me kidnapping them...geez. Not that I'm above such things, but the adoption was a great deal of work and lots of money (cash in fact). Kidnapping would've been so much easier and cheaper. Oh no...I made another adoption joke! Icheerthebull will rush back here accusing me of some other despicable crime against humanity.

I was looking at the photo of all those little Chinese kids and I started thinking. The blank, kinda confused looks on their faces was pretty much how my girls looked for the first few months after leaving Russia. My wife and I were so thrilled and stupid we didn't think...but looking back on some of those photos when we first got the girls...they have that same look. We had no idea and thought the girls looked happy, but now, looking back at those photos, they just look...well lost and bewildered. That whole first year they kinda looked like that in photos. It's strange how you don't realize the gravity of a situation until a little time has passed. Thank God, they're completely normal pre-teen girls now, but looking at those first few photos is kinda sad and scary. I bet Icheerthebull will now have abuse or theft charges filed against me.

I would imagine for them, it was traumatic to a degree. Their lives turned upside down and I would think that adjusting to their new, happy, secure lives took some time. Time to realize it was for real and forever! Are they biological sisters? It's amazing how many people we see on this site who don't give a shit about babies/children and throw theirs out like trash. It's nice to see people who want children so bad, they are willing to go to the other side of the world to make that happen!!

Yup, they're full biological sisters. I'm sure they were overcome for a while, my wife and I were just too clueless to fully grasp their confusion. To this day, I have no idea what those caregivers at the orphanage told those two girls, but whatever it was it worked. They were happy when we took them home, happy at the hotel during processing, happy on the flight home (we did fly first class because we didn't know how they would react on the flight), they were just really happy little girls. They laughted a lot and giggled all the time...we just figured they were great. The Russians told them something because they always, even from the start, called us Momma and Papa. We had only minor bonding issues with the younger girl and minor sleep issues (night terrors, etc.), but we had a good child psychologist who specialized in Russian Adoptions, and that helped a great deal. We were prepared for the absolute worst (lighting the dog/house on fire, running away, stealing, etc.) but we never had any issues. Like I said, we were very very lucky.

My best friends about 20 years ago adopted two precious kids from Russia, about a year apart ( two trips, I mean!) Like you, 30564U after exhausting all stateside options. Best things to ever happen in their lives. The little boy was about a year old, spittin' image of Rutger Hauer, lol! Good on ya for adopting your girls! And yes, some people are soo brave while behind their computer screens.
