A Harvest of Death, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

This photograph of the rotting dead awaiting burial after the Battle of Gettysburg is perhaps the best-known Civil War landscape. It was published in Gardner’s Photographic Sketch Book of the War (1866), the nation’s first anthology of photographs. The Sketch Book features ten photographic plates of Gettysburg—eight by Timothy H. O’Sullivan, who served as a field operator for Alexander Gardner, and two by Gardner himself. The extended caption that accompanies this photograph is among Gardner’s most poetic: "It was, indeed, a ‘harvest of death.’ . . . Such a picture conveys a useful moral: It shows the blank horror and reality of war, in opposition to its pageantry. Here are the dreadful details! Let them aid in preventing such another calamity falling upon the nation."

Looks like the boot thieves got to them all before the undertaker did.

As a scaredy-cat who does believe in ghosts and spirits, I could never visit a former battlefield...all the remaining negative energy would probably freak me the hell out.

I've talked to a friend who used to do Civil War reenactments and had done the Battle of Gettysburg a few times.

He's pretty sure he saw some paranormal stuff, freaked him out.

People who devote themselves as much as ur friend has, to such of an event, is exactly the sort of person who u expect to say such things... people who search for bigfoot, ufo, and other such things, will be repaid by the brain, to make such devotion worth it...

I could definitely feel the presence of others there, it felt like confused souls, still not really sure what was happening to them but wanting me to see it all...didn't feel threatened, just could feel the presence of a lot of young men, and they wanted me to remember what I saw and maybe them too..
