You can tell he was Russian because he is missing his boots. That was one thing the Russian troops had that the Germans were happy to steal because thier own boots were not near so well made.

The guys freezing to death standing up and shit totally happened it wasn't the photographer trying for dramatic pictures I know this because my high school history teacher invited an old Wehrmacht solider who fought the Russians on the eastern front he said one night while he was on a patrol he stumbled upon 20 Russians frozen to death standing up in such ways that him and the men he was with thought they were alive before closer investigation revealed what had happened.
