The injury is from the Gallipoli Campaign.
His name was Mustafa İpar. He was a lieutenant.
Prof. Jacques Joseph did the surgery.

"Lieutenant Mustafa İpar was struck in the face by a shell fired from a British ship, losing an eye, his entire nose, his cheeks, his entire upper jaw, half of his tongue, his entire upper palate, and a large portion of his lower jaw.

Despite this severe damage, he clung to life and was taken to Germany in 1918, where he underwent a surgical procedure challenging even by modern medicine, giving him a new face. Here is the striking story of the lieutenant and the doctor who gifted him his new face."
