Denver Racket's Muscle Man Mike "Fats" Falbo Lies Dead in a Bloody Car (1948)
On January 10, 1948 police found mobster Mike "Fats" Falbo dead in the front seat of his car, which had been run into a ditch near Welby, CO. In typical gangland style, Falbo had been stabbed, then shot. Staring at the body slumped toward the passenger side are Denver coroner Dr. Rice and detective Joe Duffy. Falbo's hit was the result of a small gang war that broke out among gambling interests for control of new gambling books. The war erupted after the State Legislature of Colorado passed a law legalizing pari-mutual betting (gambling on horse and dog races). Police described Falbo as a self made muscle man of Denver's gambling rackets. He was a partner of gambler and boxing promoter Harold "Murph" Cohen. They helped run posh gambling dens for the notorious Smaldone brothers in and around Denver. On November 7, 1949, Cohen was also murdered. Investigators said he knew too much about Falbo's hit. Cohen's body was found by two boys who saw it on the bottom of Blue Lake near the Coors bottling plant in Golden. He was weighted down with two 30-pound railroad irons and a boulder tied to his chest. He was wrapped with steel cable. On the night he died, Cohen attended a dinner at Gaetano's Restaurant, owned by mobsters Eugene "Checkers" Smaldone and Clyde "Flip Flop" Smaldone. The coroner said Cohen had been hit on the head, probably at the restaurant, then tied up and driven to the lake, where he was weighted down. He was alive when he was thrown in the water. Cohen's cause of death was drowning.

50/50 chance that's a good thing. You could tell me it was brewed with Rocky Mountain goat-piss and I'd believe it. I don't know how we drank gallons upon gallons of Coors Extra Gold back in college. |
