The crew is french, they were 5 and 2 of them died. Jean Bouclet (pic) was the tank commander, hit in the trunk, the beheaded one was the radio man Philippe Cadiot. This happened in Normandy, on August 13, 1944. |

It's called spalling when the metal does that. Caused by a tank round not penetrating and the backside of the armor has shards that fly off turning it into a meat grinder for anyone inside. In this case though the round went right through the tank breaching both sides so huge chunks of molten metal and carnage everywhere.
