Re: Dead Crew Recovered from Tank.
I'm always amazed by the physics of a tank hit. It almost uses the tanks armor as the projectile against the crew. Inside that tank is just swarming with molten shrapnel bouncing around a steel box in an instant. The round either bounces off or makes it a death trap in the blink of an eye.

Re: Dead Crew Recovered from Tank.
Looks to me like they were hit by a Tiger or King Tiger. Their "88" rounds would go into the front of a Sherman, and out the back, killing the crew and destroying the tank. I have talked to a lot of WWII veterans, and I never heard one of them say anything nice about the Sherman. They were well aware that if they ran into a Tiger tank, they were probably dead men. |

Re: Dead Crew Recovered from Tank.
The only "mighty" thing about the Sherman tanks were their large production numbers that the enemy couldn't come close to outproducing.

Re: Dead Crew Recovered from Tank.
Only 2 inches of armor plate on the Sherman in most places. The square things on the sides of the tank were 1-inch armor patches welded on over the ammo storage areas. None of which would stop a German 75 or 88 mm AP round.

Re: Dead Crew Recovered from Tank.
One of the downsides of quantity over quality. Then again, an 88mm APCBC-HE will fuck up any tank of that era. I mean really: When an 88mm AP shell has a penetration of 177mm at 3000 yards, while the Sherman has a penetration of 99mm at 2000 yards, this type of shit wouldn't have been uncommon. At least these guys died instantly from the explosion, and not burned alive like usual. |
