That's probably the main reason why you're fascinated by it now.

Read "Hiroshima" by John Hershey (I think that's the authors name, but I could be wrong). It's pretty short and to the point, but a good book overall. The way the Japanese treated the survivors was pretty sad. They called them hibakusha (blast-affected people), considered their radiation poisoning to be contagious, and pretty much collectively shunned them for quite a while after the bombings.

Really?

What us invasion failed?

Name the islands.

The USA won every island it invaded, including Okinawa, a Japanese home island,the last one
invaded and occupied before the atom bombs were dropped.

Plans were already in place to invade the rest of the country in case the bombs failed.
