Re: Bedlam (Bethlem Royal Hospital)

Many of those pics are pretty creepy.
I don't know about creepy.....most of them look pretty sad.....
Wonder what "Mania" is? Is that like, liking the Beatles, but they didn't exist yet, so it's not Beatlemania, just regular mania?

Re: Bedlam (Bethlem Royal Hospital)

Psychiatry care in the earlier days is very interesting.

Mental illness was not well understood then (it isn't now, either, but at least we can tell the difference between mental disorders and physical ones). "Mania" was a pretty general term for people who were, well, manic. That probably included bipolar, schizoaffective disorders, excited delirium and other high energy states.

"Melancholia" was probably people with severe, debilitating depression.

Epilepsy was not understood then to be a neurological problem, and it was presumed to be a form of insanity and often treated as such. Similarly, mental retardation and certain learning disabilities were sometimes housed in institutions because people didn't know what else to do with them. They required constant care and were not productive people in society. If a family needed every available hand to work to survive, they couldn't afford to have 2 people just sitting around being useless.

Re: Bedlam (Bethlem Royal Hospital)

Sarah Gardner looks very different from the rest of them. More of a dreamy and introspective type, however I can imagine being like that was certainly considered to be a mental illness at that time Great post

Re: Bedlam (Bethlem Royal Hospital)

House on haunted hill, with Vincent Price was excellent. I think the mental hospitals from the 18th and 19th century are by far the creepiest places on Earth.
