The belgians were assholes to the congolese. King leopold claimed the entire country as his own personal property. I am sure he felt that the people living there were his property too.

Cannibalism was rampant before, during (to a much lesser extend) and after the Belgian occupation. The Congo was a hell on earth. If you think life was better in the Congo without the Belgians, cruel as they were, you are mistaken. If anything, the presence of the colonial forces put a damper on the tribal slaughter, as that was bad for business. |
