Steve, I've argued that point for years. When I saw my dad in that casket, back in '82, I knew that wasn't the same person in life. And I honestly didn't want to see my mother and two brothers laid up in a box, but I didn't want to disappoint the rest of my family. I think funeral rituals, for some, might be a way of remembering loved ones, but for others, like you and me, it's does nothing but prolong the pain of their loss.

In many of the photos, the artistry is masterful. I would think that for many of the babies and young children, this would be the only photo ever taken of them.

Re: **19th Century Photos of Dead People**

It never amazed me the practice of honoring the dead. Obviously, in many countries, especially here in America, this type of practice has been largely abandoned. Nowadays, the body resides in a funeral home, chapel and church for viewing.

Nice collection of B/W's.
I truly believe this is a beautiful way to remember the people close to you who have died especially if they died suddenly.. why not take a photo? It seems very morbid nowadays and is obviously quite taboo but why not? I certainly wouldnt have a problem with it! Why was it abandoned?

BTW great post lotsa pics well done!
