When you apply for a job, there's an ever-increasing chance your prospective employer will ask the FBI about your criminal history. Assuming you're not a crack dealer or have explosives taped to your shoes, you have nothing to worry about, right? Wrong. Last year, the FBI did almost 17 million employment background checks. But, according to a recent report by the National Employment Law Project advocacy group, 600,000 of those contained inaccurate or incomplete data. The group's staff lawyer and report co-author Madeline Neighly describes the FBI's records as "a mess." According to the report, while many files reflect that an applicant was arrested, they are often out of date and fail to note whether the arrest led to a conviction, meaning people (especially minorities) are losing out on jobs for no good reason.
