Re: *UPDATE* Waitress Denied Tip for 'Gay Lifestyle' Gets Flood of Support
Servers on average are paid 3.15 an hr. with no benefits. The job is not easy. Most servers end up with serious physical ailments. And for those that say " well get a better job " most restaurants in the U.S. cannot afford to pay a living wage because the overhead is one of the highest in the world of business. If the restaurant were to up wages and add benefits then the cost of dining out would skyrocket. If you can't afford to tip you can't afford to eat out and be waited on. Nobody wants to go to work and have some jackass decide not to pay them for working.

Re: *UPDATE* Waitress Denied Tip for 'Gay Lifestyle' Gets Flood of Support
I live on the west coast, and waitresses here make a little under $9 an hour, to-date, without tips. In college I met a man that had bused tables in South Carolina, & was flabbergasted when he told me his working wage- $2.15 an hour- In 2005 no less How is somebody supposed to live off that? I guess the theory goes that servers will perform better if they are dependent on those tips to survive. |

Re: *UPDATE* Waitress Denied Tip for 'Gay Lifestyle' Gets Flood of Support
I think it's all about the restaurant passing on some of the expenses to the customer. When I waited tables, the hourly pay was between $2 and $3. I forget the exact amount now. Taxes on the hourly wages and tips were taken out of the check. You would be lucky to get a paycheck for $20. I don't care how frugal you are. You can't live on that. |

Re: *UPDATE* Waitress Denied Tip for 'Gay Lifestyle' Gets Flood of Support
I always tip 15% for good service, I may go 20, 25, 33, 50% or higher. It depends on the service/meal. If I cannot afford to tip my waiter/waitress, than I can not afford to eat out. What they do is not an easy job. The biggest tip, but not the largest percentage, I ever left was $75 on a $45 meal. It was Veteran's Day last year and I went for my freebie and brought the old man. The young woman was humping tables like no one's business, but she was thoughtful and polite, kept the drinks coming, let me switch things up in the meal, and was always available. You should always tip wait staff. You never know what it might mean to them, and it keeps you humble. There but for the grace of God go we. |
