I think he did what he felt she would have wanted. If the mother had been close to delivering, I might have wanted to wait a few weeks, but, this was not even close! The baby had severe deformities. Had she survived, the cost of treatment would have been outrageous. Perhaps, the father figured he could not afford to take care of a deformed and brain damaged baby. I think he will sleep better now and I think he did the right thing. I expect he will miss them both, but, they will remain in his heart and memory. |

Unfortunately, that was exactly the case here. Apparently, the baby developed hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) due to lack of maternal oxygen, as well as some other developmental defects. The father won a legal battle and life support was withdrawn from both mother and baby. This case fascinates me, I did a deep dive after reading this. I work in the ER and recently we had a case where a pt overdosed on Fentanyl and was in her second trimester. She, unfortunately, went into cardiac arrest and did not survive. It raised a lot of conversations about maternal brain death and pregnancy. I did come across a handful of *fascinating* cases where the brain dead mother was kept alive for the entire pregnancy and the infant was delivered without major complications. There are very few documented cases. Fascinating tho! |
