The 50-member assembly that awards the Nobel Prize for medicine is demanding the resignation of two of its judges, TT news agency reported on Tuesday.

At the heart of the scandal is stem-cell surgeon Paulo Macchiarini.

The surgeon who until March worked for Sweden’s Karolinska Intitutet is under criminal investigation for scientific fraud, gross criminal negligence, and misconduct leading to the death of two of his patients.

He denies all accusations.

The man who hired him in 2010, Anders Hamsten, resigned. The head of the Swedish Higher Education authority, Harriet Wallberg also resigned on Monday. She was the President of the Karolinska University Hospital when Macchiarini was hired as a researcher and consultant.

Macchiarini apparently lied on his resume.

Last week, an investigation revealed that three synthetic tracheas operations coated by stem cells led by Macchiarini at the Karolinska University Hospital were performed without sufficient research or any life-saving justification.

Two of the patients died. The third remains in hospital.
