Civilization is so fragile. All it takes is one person to cross that line into insanity and look at the devastation it causes. Rather than being shocked at these outbreaks of sadism, I've always been amazed at how orderly and peaceful society is most of the time.

Part of the frustration is that there are so few steps a free society can take to protect itself against things like this. Keep fertilizer out of the hands of bombmakers...regulate the sale of firearms...increase security at airports...strengthen border controls to keep out suspected terrorists... we can do all these things, but we will never eliminate man's innate cruelty.
