Toddler's Finger Severed In Freak Accident
VAN NUYS (KTLA) -- A toddler's finger was severed while he was riding down a courthouse escalator with his mother, according to officials. Witnesses told firefighters the 17-month old boy and his mother were riding down the escalator when his left index finger was caught and severed in the comb-and-groove of the foot tread. Rescue crews responded to the incident in the Van Nuys Civic Center around 9 a.m. Tuesday. Paramedics described the toddler as calm and brave when they arrived, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The child and mother were taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center while rescuers searched for the boy's finger. Firefighters took apart the steps of the escalator and found the finger after searching for nearly 90 minutes. Surgeons were not able to re-attach the boy's finger, according to fire officials. |
