Started reading about the captain and found this...didn't see it anywhere in the thread
Smith perished that night along with around 1,500 others, but his exact fate is unknown and his body was never recovered. Reports on his fate conflict each other. Some sources claim Smith quietly wandered off to drown in the ship's flooded wheelhouse, Robert Ballard's book, The Discovery of the Titanic, and various historians claim that Smith was on the bridge at 2:13 am, seven minutes before the final sinking and went down with the ship. Other sources say he was actively present in the radio room issuing updates as to the status of the ship to those other ships who had responded to their distress call. Working near Collapsible B, Junior Marconi Officer Harold Bride reported seeing Smith dive into the sea from the open bridge minutes before the final plunge began. Accounts of Smith urging his crew to "Be British" and carrying a child to the overturned collapsible B after the sinking before swimming off to freeze in the water are almost certainly apocryphal, according to historians featured in the A&E Documentary Titanic: Death of a Dream.
