Texas to Stop Last Meal Requests for Death Row Inmates
Texas Prisons Stop Special Last Meals for Killers Updated: Thursday, 22 Sep 2011, 2:52 PM CDT Published : Thursday, 22 Sep 2011, 2:52 PM CDT MICHAEL GRACZYK, Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) — Texas prison officials say they're stopping special last meals for condemned inmates facing execution after an elaborate request from a convicted killer in a notorious dragging death prompted complaints from a prominent state senator. Sen. John Whitmire told prisons director Brad Livingston Thursday he wanted the "ridiculous" and "inappropriate" practice ended or he'd seek a state statute banning the "last meal of choice." Livingston agreed and said the practice was ending immediately. Whitmire's ire was raised by the final meal request from Lawrence Russell Brewer, who was executed Wednesday night for his role in death of James Byrd Jr. Among other items, Brewer requested two chicken fried steaks, a triple cheeseburger, a pound of barbecue and a pint of ice cream. Prison officials said he didn't eat any of it. |

Re: Texas to Stop Last Meal Requests for Death Row Inmates
I support ending the last meal thing, however I SERIOUSLY doubt it's the answer to the money for schools problem, unless we are executing tens of thousands of prisoners a day and all of them request the most expensive caviar and 50 lobsters each as their last meal. He requested two chicken fried steaks, a triple cheeseburger, a pound of barbecue and a pint of ice cream. He's a bastard for not eating it, but let's be honest. That sets the state of TX back what $20? If it costs more than that, then that proves the point of government overspending. The solution to the school financial problem is the same as the answer to all other financial problems with the government both local and national and even international. That is that they need to start learning how to operate on the goddamned 50% tax that we all pay (including all taxes, not just straight up income tax). The Boston tea party happened because of a THREAT of a 10% government tax. How gullible we are today. Hell we'll even vote to have our own stupid selves taxed even higher because the government tells us that it's for our own good. |

Re: Texas to Stop Last Meal Requests for Death Row Inmates
I read the article yesterday and thought of DR's website about death row/executed people. DR folks were interested in their last meals. Back when were we a sweeter nation (last week) we even had compassion on killers. Sad. I must be a liberal.
