Taiwan Train Crash Leaves 36 Dead & Dozens Trapped
AT LEAST 36 people have been killed and dozens injured as train smashed into a truck which fell onto the line in Taiwan. The busy service carrying 350 passengers derailed in the horror smash which is the island's most devastating rail disaster in four decades The 408 Taroko Express - travelling from Taipei to Taitung and carrying many tourists and people heading home at the start of the long weekend - came off the rails north of Hualien in eastern Taiwan. Shocking pictures of the crash scene show carriages inside the tunnel ripped apart from the impact at around 9am local time. Others crumpled, hindering rescuers reaching passengers who remained trapped inside the wreckage. |

I just posted on the water cooler inquiring about this, and here it is! There should be some excellent video recordings eventually, as I am sure the Taiwanese have security cameras everywhere. |

Awesome! From the footage, it hardly looks as though it was as serious as it turned out to be. Any ideas how fast the train was moving? Is this slow motion footage?

don't think it's slow mo. Officials said nearly 500 people were on the train - 372 seated and a further 120 standing in the aisles. Top speed for this train was 80mph
Ms Chung said the train did not seem to reduce speed before the crash. "The conductor started honking early and he knew there was some situation ahead, but he didn't slow down," she said. "He was driving fast until the train hit the tunnel." The train conductor and two other railway staff were among those killed, according to the authorities. The youngest victim listed so far was six years old. |
