Strange Excuse For Not Paying Bedroom Tax
Mother claims she shouldn’t pay bedroom tax because a ghost occupies her spare room ![]() Saturday 16 Aug 2014 4:19 pm [Source: Metro] A mother has come up with an interesting reason for not paying the bedroom tax – claiming a ghost is living in her spare room so it is actually occupied. Lorna McDonald, 46, from Liverpool claims an evil spirit who has terrorised her home for months forced her daughter to move out in fear, and took up residency in her empty room. She even called in priests to exorcise the ghost, which she says has assaulted her and left bruises on her body. Mrs McDonald now lives alone (or does she?) and, being in arrears, cannot afford the bedroom tax for the two-bedroom property. Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Mrs McDonald said she didn’t believe in ghosts before her ordeal begun. She said: ‘When the priest told me it was like all my fears had gone away, because I knew it was really happening.’ Due to her being behind on her payments, she is unable to leave the house. Despite Mrs McDonald’s claims, government rules on what constitutes as ‘under-occupancy’ for bedrooms does not include paranormal house guests, meaning she is still liable to pay the charge. Introduced by the Welfare Reform Act 2012, the controversial bedroom tax means that households with one spare bedroom lose 14 per cent of their housing benefit. |
