The word sniper isn't just used for someone who is militarily trained. It can be used for anyone who shoots at other people with a gun from a concealed position.

Sharpshooter is a military term used to denote someone who is one step above marksman in rifle skill.

Can't say I saw it coming (in that way), but somehow it's no surprise. And I'm afraid the Dallas shootings could be the trigger/beginning of a new wave of violence against cops and possibly we'll see copycat shootings in the future.
