Six Flags Puts Final Piece on New Wooden Coaster Goliath

There is no fucking way I would get on this one! This makes the Eagle (which was my least favorite wooden coaster there) look like a child's toy.

Six Flags Great America announced Saturday that it has secured the last section of its165-foot-high roller coaster Goliath, now the world's fastest wooden roller coaster.

The Gurnee, Ill. park said it is in the final stages of construction on the roller coaster, which will open to the public in a few weeks.

Goliath is the first wooden roller coaster in the world to propel riders upside-down through two separate maneuvers, the organization said in a release. The ride required a total of 300,000 feet of lumber, 70,000 bolts and 40,000 hours of work to build.

I'll stick with stronger materials for my roller coasters.

Re: Six Flags Puts Final Piece on New Wooden Coaster Goliath

Neat to look at, but there is not enough money on the planet for me to ride any more roller coasters...was tramatized by the Matterhorn at Disneyland when I was 3, (excellent parenting, Mom! ) and Space Mountain in Disneyworld at 9 was just...thoroughly unpleasant.

That said, wooden coasters are awesome functional sculptures. We have one at Playland (Vancouver's amusement park and PNE fairgrounds in the summer). It's ~60 years old and extremely well maintained.

i went to ride the 'timber terror' (a coaster at the local theme park) and it's all made of wood... i was about two more cycles before i would have gotten on the fuckin thing but they shut it down for maintenance ... something about watching a dimwitted maintenance dude tightening bolts on a large wooden structure just didnt scream 'safety' to me im sure it's fine... it's still standing and hasnt killed anybody yet but... fuck that shit.

Looking at the pic made my stomach flip. I am deathly afraid of heights and water.

It's the terrifying and awful stomach-shoved-in head sensation I hate most of all. I hate that freefall feeling. Adrenaline and endorphins only do so much, right?
