Re: Several Dozen People Presumed Dead After Bar Fire in Swiss
IIRC a fire pileup of people is like cured cement. What the video of the pileup showed me was how fuckin' fast and intense the fire was, it was blowing behind those people like a blowtorch and you could see thru the windows people climbing onto the people pile like salmon bucking upstream. I don't know how much removing the rails would help. Breaking a window might allow air in for a fiery explosion, but that was so fast and fucked up I don't see that a window broken would help someone getting cooked who has a blind desire to go out the exit they came in.

Re: Several Dozen People Presumed Dead After Bar Fire in Swiss
Charlie Hebdo, a magazine known for publishing caricatures of Mohammed and being attacked for it resulting in dead journalists, posted the following. The title is playing on a comedy from the 70s called "Lez broncés font du ski", meaning "The tanned are skiing", while their version means "The burned are skiing". The other text means "the comedy of the year". Source: https://www.24heures.ch/crans-montan...e-769133968919 |

Re: Several Dozen People Presumed Dead After Bar Fire in Swiss
The latest victim in the Swiss bar fire is an 18-year-old Swiss national who died from injuries on January 31, 2026, in a Zurich hospital. This raised the total death toll to 41. A criminal investigation has reportedly been opened against a former official who had been in charge of safety checks of the bar, making him the third person charged, after the bar's owners, a French couple. Local authorities revealed that no annual safety check had been carried out at the bar since 2019. Switzerland's Federal Office for Civil Protection told AFP on Friday that at its last count, as of Monday, 44 patients were being treated in hospitals abroad. They included 18 in France, 12 in Italy, eight in Germany and six in Belgium. The Wallis health ministry told that 37 patients were still in Swiss hospitals. The day before, several hundred demonstrators marched in Lausanne to demand "justice and truth" over the blaze that also injured 155 people. |

Re: Several Dozen People Presumed Dead After Bar Fire in Swiss
Swiss prosecutors have officially expanded their investigation to include Nicolas Féraud, the Mayor of Crans-Montana, and 4 other current or former local officials. They are being investigated for negligent homicide because the bar had reportedly not undergone a safety inspection since 2019. The Swiss Parliament today approved a one-time solidarity payment of 50,000 Swiss francs ($64,000) for the families of each deceased victim and for every survivor who required hospitalization. The local police force in Crans-Montana manages approximately 250 public cameras. Due to a standard setting, the system automatically overwrote the footage after seven days. The Valais Public Prosecutor only formally requested the footage on January 15, 2026, over two weeks after the New Year’s Eve disaster, by which time the recordings from the night of the fire had already been erased. ffs. About six hours of footage (from midnight to 6:00 AM on January 1) was recovered by the cantonal police. Crucial footage from the evening of December 31, which could have shown the bar's occupancy levels and safety conditions before the fire, is gone. Police Chief Yves Sauvain argued that the Prosecutor’s office should have known about the seven-day retention limit but legal experts argue the police had a duty to preserve evidence immediately following a mass-casualty event. (indeed) Kévin Barras, a former municipal councillor for security, and several safety inspectors have also been charged with negligent homicide and causing a fire through negligence. Others that were charged with negligent bodily harm and negligent arson were Christophe Balet, being the current head of public safety for the municipality. Ken Jacquemoud, who is the predecessor to the head of public safety. Pierre Albéric Clivaz, Rudy Tissières and Baptiste Cotter that were former and current officials responsible for safety controls. Further hearings are scheduled in the 2nd week of April. While the bar passed its last inspection in June 2019, subsequent audits and witness reports highlight that the checks were superficial and failed to address several critical hazards. The inspection did not object to the installation of polyurethane sound-insulating foam on a low ceiling, which later proved to be highly flammable. Investigations suggest the bar owners, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, performed unauthorized renovations in 2015 that narrowed the main staircase, creating a fatal bottleneck. The main exit door opened inward instead of outward, contrary to Swiss fire safety regulations. While the municipal report set the maximum capacity at 200 people, the owners were reportedly advertising the venue for up to 400 people. A video from New Year's Eve 2019/2020 showed staff members actively warning patrons to watch out for the foam while sparklers were being used, indicating long-standing awareness of the risk. |
