School Shooting in British Columbia

A school shooting in British Columbia has left eight people dead, including a shooter, and dozens injured, Canadian police say.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)said on Tuesday, local time, a suspect had been found dead with what was believed to be a self-inflicted injury.

Police earlier said officers were working to determine whether a second suspect was involved.

"This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response," Superintendent Ken Floyd said.

"Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident."

Six people were found dead at the school, two were airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries and another died in transit, police said.

A further 25 people are being treated at a local medical centre with non-life-threatening injuries.

They are asking residents of the town of Tumbler Ridge, which has a population of about 2,400 people, to stay inside as additional police resources are being deployed to the area from neighbouring areas.

The Peace River South School District said on Tuesday, local time, that there was a "lockdown and secure and hold" at both the secondary school and the Tumbler Ridge Elementary school.

Larry Neufeld, the member of the legislature for Peace River South, told reporters that an "excess" of resources, including RCMP and ambulance support, have been sent to the community.

He said he did not want to release any more information over concerns that it might jeopardise the safety of the ongoing operation.

He urged those in the community to stay where they are.

"We do understand that a few folks are out looking for loved ones, and again, please, please go back to your homes and shelter in place and allow the amazing people of the RCMP to make this community, this beautiful community, safe again," he said.

Tumbler Ridge is more than 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver, near the border with Alberta.

The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having 175 students from Grades 7 to 12.

Re: School Shooting in British Columbia

9 dead now, incl. the shooter. Officers believe they have identified the shooter, but said they will "struggle" to ever determine a motive for what has become one of the deadliest school shootings in Canadian history.

Juno news, which is a right biased website, claims it was a transgender as they spoke to the Uncle of the shooter who confirmed it but we have to wait for the offical announcement of the police/authorities before fingerpointing.

Hardly any photos available. I've not saw one or video from inside the school.

Re: School Shooting in British Columbia

Jesse Van Rootselaar, 18, a local resident, believed to have killed two relatives at Tumbler Ridge home before the school shooting.

Those found dead at the school were a female teacher, 39, three girls, all 12, and two boys, one 12 and one 13.

Van Rootselaar's mother, 39 and a 11 year old boy/sibling were found dead at the family home.

Jesse was born as a biological male who approximately six years ago began to transition to female.

Police said there is a history of police responses to the suspect’s family home, including calls related to mental health concerns.

The suspect had previously been apprehended under the Mental Health Act for assessment and follow-up.

About two years ago, officers seized firearms from the residence under the Criminal Code. The lawful owner later petitioned to have the weapons returned. Police said the suspect had an expired firearms license in 2024 and had no guns registered in her name.

Investigators said they have not yet determined a motive and are continuing to examine the suspect’s background and prior interactions with law enforcement.
