Correct but i'm sure many, many swedish or others not from south africa knew or know that Hottentot is a derogatory term for a group of indigenous people called the "Khoikhoi". Why re-name the gypsy bird as most people think it's a bird that likes to travel or something. They went totally over the top with some names imo. |

But on the other hand.. What else is there for them to do?  Not much action in the ornithological societhy these days, I believe. Reviewing every single bird name is probably their equivalent of watching all star wars movies on a rainy day.  |

all "******" is, is a sloppy pronunciation of the latin word for "black"... how is "black" any less offensive...? and how is an innocent mispronunciation of "niger" offensive? we better rename Nigeria and the Niger River right quick then....

Unbelievable; I really wish it was April 1st, then I could dismiss this as an April Fools joke. Regarding the word "kaffir", white people arent allowed to use it, but Muslims are? Thats what Muslims call non-Muslims; kaffir.

Hottentott has been used for younger african males. Haven't heard that specific history of the word before Zigenare is a word that's basically as loaded as *****. I don't know, this time it was quite okay. Some of the things that have been banned recently really takes the sensitivity cake though. Like gingerbread men in the annual Lucia marches in school, for being brown. Maybe that wasn't banned but just discussed.. Either way, it's butthurt on a national scale. |
